Explaining The Jerseys

Yellow Jersey (Maillot Jaune)-Worn by the race leader as determined by using aggregate time. The jersey is yellow to represent the pages of L’Equipe newspaper which was the original Tour sponsor.

White Jersey (Maillot Blanc)-Worn by the leader of the Best Young Rider (26 years old or younger as of January 1) determined by aggregate time.

Green Jersey (Maillot Vert)-Worn by the leader of the Most Consistent Finisher competition as determined by points awarded on a sliding scale based on finishing place. This competition is usually won by a sprinter as points are available at intermediate points as well as the final finish of the day.

King of the Mountain (KOM) Polka Dot Jersey-Worn by the leader of the King of the Mountains competition as determined by point totals awarded by place over categorized climbs. Smaller climbs (Category III and IV) will have a lessor amount of points available and points do not go as deep as the longer, steeper climbs (HC, Category I and II). Points are doubled for a summit finish.
